Correlation between clinical characteristics and prognosis of patients with stage Ⅱ colon cancer: based on SEER database

Abstract

Objective: To investigate the relationship between clinicopathological features and prognosis in patients with stage Ⅱ colon cancer (CC). Methods: The information of patients with stage Ⅱ colon cancer in the SEER database from 2010 to 2015 was collected. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analysis were used to identify independent factors. The predictive performance of the model was evaluated by the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) and its area under the curve (AUC). The calibration curve was used to describe the proximity between the predicted risk and the actual risk. Decision curve analysis (DCA) was used to evaluate the clinical availability of the model. Results: A total of 21 019 patients were included in the study, with a training set (14 711 patients) and a validation set (6 308 patients). Age, marital status, race, primary site of tumor, AJCC stage, and surgery were all independent risk factors affecting the prognosis of CC. In the training set, the area under the ROC curve of the nomogram prediction model for predicting 1-year, 3-year, 5-year, and 8-year overall survival (OS) was 0.759, 0.736, 0.738, and 0.761, respectively, while the area under the ROC curve of the nomogram prediction model for predicting 1-year, 3-year, 5-year, and 8-year cancer-specific survival (CSS) was 0.773, 0.74, 0.712, and 0.707, respectively. Conclusion: A nomogram constructed by SEER database data can be used to predict the prognosis and overall survival rate of patients with stage Ⅱ CC. After internal verification, it shows relatively satisfactory predictive performance and contributes to the prediction and clinical practice of future related populations.
