Abstract

Objective: To explore the effect of arginine on biomembranous of clinical isolates of Streptococcus mutans. Methods: The clinical isolates and standard strains of Streptococcus mutans were selected and treated with different mass fractions of arginine (0.75%, 1.5%, 3.0%, 6.0%) as the experimental group, and treated with equal volume of sterile saline as the control group. The effects of arginine on biofilm formation and extracellular polysaccharide synthesis of Streptococcus mutans were detected by crystal violet staining and Congo red dye method. The effect of arginine on the acid production and acid resistance of biofilm formation of Streptococcus mutans was detected by glycolytic pH drop method and acid resistance test. Results: With the increase of arginine mass fraction, the biofilm formation and extracellular polysaccharide content of Streptococcus mutans decreased significantly. Arginine could also reduce the acid production and acid resistance of biomembranous of clinical isolates of Streptococcus mutans. Conclusion: Arginine can inhibit the biofilm formation of clinical isolates of Streptococcus mutans.
