Abstract

Objective: To investigate the ultrasonic imaging and pathological features of mermaid syndrome during early pregnancy. Methods: 8 cases of mermaid syndrome diagnosed by prenatal ultrasound in The Third Hospital of Baogang Group from May 2011 to August 2021 were retrospectively analyzed and compared with autopsy results of fetal specimens. Results: 8 cases of mermaid syndrome were confirmed by follow-up after induced labor, and 6 cases had detailed radiology or pathological examination data. The most direct and typical ultrasonographic feature of prenatal diagnosis of mermaid syndrome is double lower limb fusion, and 8 cases are double lower limb fusion.Other associated malformations include 7 cases of skin edema, 5 cases of single umbilical artery, 2 cases of abdominal wall defect, 3 cases of spinal column abnormality, 3 cases of oligohydramnios, and 2 cases of cardiac malformation. Conclusion: The ultrasonographic manifestations of mermaid syndrome complicated with other malformations are complex and varied, and the fusion of lower limbs is the unique ultrasonographic manifestation.Prenatal ultrasound examination is of great value in the diagnosis of mermaid syndrome, and the results of ultrasound examination are highly consistent with those of radiology department and pathology department.
