Abstract

Objective: To investigate the occurrence of cerebral microbleeds ( CMBs ) and risk factors affecting the severity of CMBs. Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on 1 616 patients who underwent conventional MRI sequence and susceptibility weighted imaging (SWI) examination in our hospital. Patients were matched according to their age and gender, and finally 668 CMBs-positive patients were divided into the case group and 668 CMBs-negative patients into the control group. Clinical data of patients in the two groups were collected, including history of hypertension, diabetes, abnormal lipid metabolism, et al. The differences of clinical data between the case group and control group were statistically compared. According to the number of CMBs, CMBs-positive patients were further divided into the mild, moderate and severe group. The differences of clinical data among the three groups were also compared. Results: There were significant differences in white matter sparsity (LA) and lacunar infarction (LI) between the case group and the control group (P<0.05). Hypertension and age were significantly correlated with the occurrence of CMBs (P<0.05). There were also significant differences on hypertension, LA and LI levels among mild, moderate and severe CMBs patients (P<0.05). Systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, mean arterial pressure, LA and LI levels were positively correlated with the number of CMBs. Conclusion: Hypertension and age are risk factors to CMBs, and the incidence and severity of CMBs are closely related to the degree of LA and LI.
